UKAS given new BIM certification scheme for Level 2

It has recently been announced that the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) has been tasked by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) with creating a new certification scheme to show that companies comply with Level 2 BIM.

BRE Global already run a number of UKAS-accredited certification schemes, Dan Rossiter, BRE’s senior BIM communicator has explained that they are confident BRE Global will actively pursue UKAS accreditation for BIM. Amongst the other UKAS accredited certification schemes currently competing for BIM Level 2 status are BSI, Lloyd’s Register and Ocean Certification.

Following the launch of this (date yet to be confirmed) this will benefit our members in the following five ways:

  1. Avoid Confusion
The new certification will help avoid confusion for suppliers seeking accredited certification for their BIM level 2 activities.
  2. Create direction and structure
It will help to get more suppliers BIM certified by creating direction and structure to the BIM certification scheme.
  3. Provide clarity
The introduction of this new scheme will make it clearer for us and our members on which certificates we can and can’t accept.
  4. Give automatic exemption
Those suppliers who hold the new UKAS accredited certificates will be exempt from answering questions in our BIM section and will automatically adhere to our PAS 91 question set.
  5. Distinguishes suppliers
Make it easier for buyers to see which of their suppliers meet the requirements set out for BIM Level 2.

The focus for this new certification scheme surrounds the government’s Construction Strategy requirement for suppliers needing to be working at BIM Level 2.

As part of Constructionline’s rigorous supplier assessment process which aligns to PAS 91:2013 we accept all UKAS accredited certification schemes as evidence of a supplier’s BIM competency.
