What are CPV Codes? A Guide for UK Construction contractors

Navigating public sector procurement can be challenging for UK construction contractors, especially when it comes to identifying relevant opportunities. CPV codes, or Common Procurement Vocabulary codes, play a crucial role in this process.

This blog will explain:

  • What CPV codes are
  • How they work
  • Why understanding them is essential for successfully finding and bidding on construction tenders
  • Plus, where you can find a construction CPV code list for our platform, depending on your trade

What are CPV codes?

CPV codes (Common Procurement Vocabulary) are a standardised classification system used by public sector contracting authorities to describe the subject matter of procurement contracts. By using a single classification system, CPV codes make it easier for businesses to find relevant tender opportunities and for buyers to identify suitable suppliers efficiently.

Do we still use CPV codes in the UK after Brexit?

Yes, the UK continues to use the CPV system. Although the European Union introduced the Common Procurement Vocabulary (making it mandatory from 1 February 2006), these regulations were retained in UK law following the UK’s departure from the EU on 31 January 2020.

Because it is an established, effective framework recognised by procurement officers across the continent, it remains the standard for describing public sector contracts in the UK.

How CPV codes work

The CPV system uses a hierarchical tree structure comprising codes of up to nine digits. This structure moves from general to specific, allowing buyers to describe the type of works, supplies, or services with high precision.

How is a CPV code made up?

A CPV code consists of 8 digits plus a 9th verification digit. The more zeros a code has, the more general the description; the more specific numbers, the more detailed the description.

  • First four digits: XXXX0000-Y (Classes)

How CPV codes affect your business

Understanding CPV codes is crucial for streamlining your lead generation and ensuring you don’t miss viable projects.

  • For Subcontractors: Searching by CPV allows you to filter out irrelevant tenders. Instead of browsing thousands of “construction” jobs, you can pinpoint “plastering” or “electrical installation” specifically, depending on your trade.
  • For Main Contractors: When you publish ITTs (Invitations to Tender) or EOIs (Expressions of Interest), applying the correct code ensures your opportunity reaches the most qualified suppliers, reducing admin time spent sifting through unsuitable bids.

Find work on Marketplace
