Released by Build UK in 2024, version 4 of the Common Assessment Standard (CAS V4) introduces a new section on building safety, aligning with the Building Safety Act (BSA) to promote compliance, transparency and safety across the sector. For construction subcontractors and main contractors, understanding and integrating these changes will be essential to staying competitive. With Constructionline’s platform now updated, here’s what you need to know. What is the Common Assessment Standard? The Common Assessment Standard, developed by Build UK in partnership with Constructionline, is a standardised pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) for the construction sector. It streamlines the construction procurement process by providing a unified set of questions for assessing suppliers and subcontractors. This standardisation of construction PQQs improves efficiency by reducing duplication, and saving time and resources for both subcontractors and main contractors. The Common Assessment Standard also promotes transparency by ensuring all construction suppliers are aware of the requirements. This promotes a more competitive and informed working environment. What’s New in the Common Assessment Standard V4? Building safety section CAS V4 introduces a dedicated building safety section, designed to verify subcontractors meet Building Safety Act requirements. This helps ensure certified suppliers have the organisational capability to fulfil their roles under the Building Safety Act, a critical aspect for projects subject to stringent safety standards. Advisory status for 6 months, which will not impact your Gold or Platinum Verification status Completing the building safety section is currently advisory, allowing companies time to familiarise themselves with the new questions and requirements. Later in 2025, this section will transition to mandatory for specific projects. While it is advisory, the new section will not impact your Gold or Platinum verification status. Specific supporting documentation is required for the BSA section Although the new BSA section is not mandatory for a period of time. If you want to be verified for this section, you will need to upload new supporting documentation. To help you, we have this guidance document to view. Does the Building Safety Act apply to you? While the new BSA section of CASv4 is optional for the time being, it will apply to a large proportion of the industry. We’ve created a short video to help you understand who the BSA applies to. Please note: Your contractors may request you to complete these questions to align with their own supply chain policies. Staying ahead of the curve by completing the new questions could give you a competitive edge. How CAS V4 benefits subcontractors For subcontractors, CAS V4 provides a straightforward route to showcase compliance with the BSA and industry regulations. It also helps open doors to new business opportunities. The standard offers real-time compliance updates, reducing the administrative burden on smaller companies that typically manage high verification costs. Additional benefits include enhanced credibility by demonstrating a commitment to safety and compliance. It also increases visibility – being on the Constructionline platform connects subcontractors with main contractors actively seeking compliant partners. What help is on hand?
