Why should you attend a Meet the Buyer construction networking event?

Finding new construction work is one of the biggest challenges facing subcontractors, particularly smaller businesses without dedicated business development teams. Cold outreach can feel like shouting into the void, and even the most capable firms can struggle to get in front of the right decision-makers.

Once For All hosts its Marketplace Live events across the UK, all year round. But, there is also the chance to attend more intimate events by main contractors’ requests, where they look to meet with suppliers on a more personal level.

That’s exactly what our Meet the Buyer events are designed to address. Co-hosted by Once For All and a main contractor actively looking to find suitable subcontractors for their upcoming projects, attending a Meet the Buyer event gives subcontractors direct, face-to-face access to the people who actually award work. No gatekeepers. No cold emails. Just genuine conversations with the contacts who matter.

This blog outlines everything you need to know for our Meet the Buyer events, so you can:

  • Be prepared and know what to expect before attending
  • Understand why attending could have a real impact on your pipeline
  • Know how to make the most of the experience from preparation through to the day itself
  • Learn how to attend our nationwide Marketplace Live events

A Once For All Meet the Buyer event is a focused construction networking event that brings subcontractors together with key contacts from a specific main contracting company.

Unlike larger trade shows or open networking events, Meet the Buyer is structured, purposeful, and deliberately intimate.

Each event is co-hosted by Once For All with a main contractor that is actively sourcing suppliers for upcoming projects in or around a particular region. That means you are not simply swapping business cards with a general crowd; you are speaking directly with decision makers such as estimators, quantity surveyors, and heads of supply chain.

Why attend a Meet the Buyer event?

Meet decision-makers directly

The single biggest barrier for subcontractors seeking new work is getting noticed by the right people. According to our 2026 Construction Marketplace Health Index, over a third of subcontractors (34%) say their main challenge is simply getting their business noticed by the right contractors. Meet the Buyer removes that barrier entirely. You walk in knowing exactly who will be there and leave having had direct conversations with those who influence contract decisions.

Grow your project pipeline

Every conversation at a Meet the Buyer event is an opportunity to discuss live tender opportunities and upcoming work packages. Rather than waiting for an enquiry to land in your inbox, you can proactively introduce your capabilities, confirm your availability, and position your business for work that has not yet been publicly tendered.

Gain industry insight

Beyond the one-to-one conversations, Meet the Buyer events often include discussions led by industry professionals. These sessions provide valuable context on what buyers are currently prioritising, from compliance expectations to social value requirements, helping you shape your offer accordingly.

Build lasting relationships

A single conversation at a Meet the Buyer event can lead to a long-term supply chain partnership, not just a one-off contract. Buyers return to subcontractors they know, trust, and have worked with before. Attending these events regularly puts you in front of those buyers before your competitors are even on their radar.

How to prepare for a Meet the Buyer event

The value you get from a Meet the Buyer event is largely determined by how well you prepare. Here is how to set yourself up for a productive day.

  • Research buyers in advance: Search on LinkedIn or the main contractor’s webpage so you can find out who is hosting the event. Look into their recent project activity, the sectors they operate in, and the types of subcontractors they typically work with. Arriving with that knowledge shows professionalism and makes your conversations more focused. (Contact details are sometimes included in Meet the Buyer invites too) Look for roles such as Estimators, Quantity Surveyors and Supply Chain managers.
  • Refine your pitch: Prepare a concise summary of your business: what you do, where you work, and what makes you a reliable supply chain partner. Keep it outcome-driven and avoid generic statements.
  • Bring evidence of your work: Case studies, project photographs, client references, and relevant accreditations all help you demonstrate credibility quickly. If a buyer can see the quality of your work, they are far more likely to remember you.

What to expect on the day

As these are more intimate, you have the chance to speak to key decision makers face-to-face, showcase your business and understand what kinds of suppliers they’re looking to work with.

To get the most from the day, we recommend:

  • Wear your workwear: First impressions count! Branded workwear positions you as a credible, professional business.
  • Lead with your pitch: Be ready to introduce yourself and your company clearly and confidently within the first few seconds of each conversation.
  • Showcase relevant experience: If you have worked on similar projects or in the same sector as the buyer, say so. Demonstrable experience carries more weight than general capability claims.
  • Ask informed questions: Main contractors notice when a subcontractor has done their homework. Asking specific, relevant questions helps you stand out and signals genuine interest.
  • Optimise your Constructionline profile before you arrive: Main contractors often access the platform after events to review interested attendees’ information. Make sure your profile is up to date, your work categories are accurate, and your compliance documents are current. Most buyers on the platform mandate a minimum compliance level, so a verified, complete profile significantly improves your chances of being shortlisted.
  • Network with other suppliers: The people attending alongside you are not just competitors; they are potential joint venture partners. Connecting with other subcontractors in complementary trades can open doors to collaborative bids on larger contracts.

How to register for a Meet the Buyer event

Meet the Buyer events are invite-only. If you have an optimised Constructionline profile, are already on the main contractor’s supply chain list and meet their minimum requirements, there is a likelihood you’ll be sent an invite to attend their next Meet the Buyer event.

Here are some tips to improve your chances to secure an invite:

  • Use the Contact Details Tab on Market Intelligence to see what projects they have coming up and speak to their key decision makers, and ask if you can attend
  • Ask! Some main contractors filter their attendees from their supply chain by location. If you haven’t received an invite but feel you could fulfil their services, reach out to them
  • Optimise your Constructionline profile: make sure your profile is verified and up to date, including your work categories, contact details and locations you cover
  • Also keep an eye on social media: main contractors post when they’ll be hosting a Meet the Buyer event with Once For All

FAQs

Are Marketplace Live and Meet the Buyer events the same?

Not quite. Marketplace Live events are hosted across the UK throughout the year, providing main contractors and subcontractors with the chance to meet face-to-face and discuss upcoming work opportunities.

Meet the Buyer is similar, but far more intimate and co-hosted with just one main contractor. It is also invite-only.
