Common Assessment Standard version 6: Early update

Common Assessment Standard LogoThe Common Assessment Standard (CAS) is the preferred pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) for the UK construction industry. To keep pace with industry changes, an updated version, CAS version 6, will be published on 1st November 2026, although an early update has gone live this week. More information below. 

This update affects your profile, and there is a simple action you will need to take. Read on to see exactly what’s changing, why it matters for your business, and what you need to do to stay Verified. 

Why these changes have been made 

Developed by Build UK, the Common Assessment Standard has transformed the construction pre-qualification process and raised standards of quality and competence across the sector. 

CAS version 6 aligns with the Building Safety Act, which places a clear emphasis on raising levels of competence throughout the industry. By moving 3 key questions into a mandatory section, the updated standard strengthens how every business demonstrates competence, from main contractors down through the supply chain. 

What this means for you 

To stay in line with Build UK’s updates, we will move three questions (135, 136, and 138) from the Building Safety requirement to the Quality requirement. 

Every section of the Common Assessment Standard is mandatory apart from Building Safety. This means that once these three questions move into the Quality requirement, all suppliers will be required to answer them to maintain a Verified profile.

Maintaining a Verified profile is what main contractors look for when choosing who to work with. Completing these questions keeps your profile Verified and working for you, so you can: 

  • Pre-qualify for more opportunities: Stand out to main contractors who mandate the Common Assessment Standard as a minimum requirement. 
  • Demonstrate your competence: Show main contractors you meet the standards they expect and take safety on-site seriously. 
  • Stay aligned with legislation: Evidence that you work in line with the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations, and wider industry standards. 

Put simply, staying Verified keeps you competitive and helps you win more work. 

Why we’re making these changes before November 

Main contractors are under increasing pressure to demonstrate competence throughout their supply chains. We will be moving the questions on our platform on 15th September. By completing these questions and maintaining your Verified status ahead of the deadline, you stay ready for their projects and remain part of building a safer future for the construction industry. 

Acting early also means a smoother transition for you, with no last-minute rush when CAS version 6 takes effect.

Which questions are affected? 

The following three questions will move from the Building Safety requirement to the mandatory Quality requirement:

Do you need to do anything? 

The changes take effect across the industry from 1st November 2026, and we will update our platform ahead of this date on 15th September. 

Provided your notifications are switched on, you’ll be alerted when the questions move automatically on the platform. From that point, you’ll simply need to complete questions 135, 136, and 138, once they’ve moved to the Quality requirement, to keep your profile Verified. Getting them done in good time keeps you visible to main contractors with no interruption to your Verified status.
